Discussion Question Reflection

I chose two lessons that most challenged me, the professional interview and checklist assignment and the

web-based assessment. The professional interview and checklist assignment was challenging because I

work in higher education and not k-12. I was unaware of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act

(IDEA) requirements since higher education utilizes the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA).

Accommodations in higher education require extended time for testing or a separate testing location if the

student has supporting disability documentation. Students in higher education must self-advocate for what

they need, and the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) protects the student’s privacy

(Vogel, 2021). Professors are not required to speak with parents unless students sign a waiver.

The web-based assessment was the second most challenging assignment. The challenge was finding the appropriate platform. I built three web-based assessments before I realized they would not meet the assignment requirements. I had no problem building the assessment or rubric, but I was very frustrated doing the assignment because choosing a platform was difficult.

I have a better understanding of public education standards and laws. I learned about IDEA and parental advocacy to ensure children receive equal general education (Vogel, 2021). I admire k-12 teachers because there are many aspects to ensure students receive individualize learning plans. I will take with me the opportunity to learn about k-12 education requirements, and the difficulties teachers face. The most important thing I will take with me is a newfound admiration of today’s teachers.
